Henry Grendell’s career has been equally divided between business litigation at one of Cleveland’s largest law firms and his role as General Counsel of an insurance company. This combination of deep litigation and corporate/business legal knowledge makes his experience unique.
He began his career serving as the judicial law clerk to Hon. Paul H. Mitrovich of the Lake County Court of Common Pleas. Following the completion of his clerkship in 1996, Mr. Grendell joined the Cleveland, Ohio law firm of Gallagher, Sharp, Fulton & Norman, where he focused on insurance-related issues, including both the defense of insureds and insurance coverage cases.
In 1998, Mr. Grendell joined Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP as an associate in the firm’s litigation department. At Calfee, Mr. Grendell’s practice focused on various litigation matters, including insurance liquidation, securities, ERISA and bankruptcy litigation cases. He also handled a variety of commercial and general corporate lawsuits. He practiced extensively in both state and federal courts. He also resolved numerous disputes through alternative dispute resolution methods, including arbitration and mediation.
Mr. Grendell joined Family Heritage Life Insurance Company as its first General Counsel in January, 2005, providing advice on all legal matters facing the company. He was responsible for overseeing the Human Resources and Compliance Departments. In 2012, he played a key role in the acquisition of Family Heritage by Torchmark Corporation. That same year he received the prestigious Crain’s Outstanding General Counsel award.
Henry is also active on a variety of non-profit boards. Since 2006, he has been a trustee of the Julie Billiart School in Lyndhurst, Ohio. The Julie Billiart School is sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame and is devoted to helping children with special learning needs. He served as the Chairman of the School’s Board Development/Governance Committee from 2008 to 2014. Mr. Grendell completed a term as trustee of the Great Lakes Theater, located in Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland. The Great Lakes Theater is one of the nation’s pre-eminent regional theater companies, and the theater that helped start the careers of many great actors, including Tom Hanks and John Lithgow. Mr. Grendell serves on the Audience Development Committee. In 2016, Mr. Grendell began a term as a Trustee of the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce.
